About

I’ve been working with wood for a while – mostly with power tools, and mostly getting things done rather than doing them well. A router makes quick work of a joint. A table saw breaks down lumber fast. You can build real things without ever developing much feel for the material.

At some point that started to bother me.

Hand tools changed how I work. Not immediately, and not easily – there’s a learning curve that power tools largely let you skip, and the first few months humbled me more than I expected. But somewhere in the process of learning to sharpen a chisel properly, or getting a hand plane to take a gossamer shaving, something clicked. I was actually learning woodworking, not just operating machinery.

That shift from operator to craftsman is what this site is about. I’m not an expert. I’m someone with some experience, a good book, and a lot of curiosity. Quiet Woodcraft is where I work through it.
